Congress Heights Training Center, Inc. operates various vocational skills training programs for youth and adults. The normal schedule of a training class is a six (6) month training cycle, six (6) hours per day, Monday through Friday.
The center uses a competency-based system for teaching and evaluation. This system rates client progress through pre and post testing. The first step requires pre testing to determine participants’ knowledge and skills in particular areas. The second step is instruction in a classroom setting by an experienced trainer using lecture and demonstration to convey information to the client. The third step, the practicum or "hands on" experience, allows participants to demonstrate their learned skills. Examples of vocational programs include computer skills, general construction, and building maintenance training. Case management is an integral part of the training in that it reduces the likelihood of a premature program or job separation.
The succeeding phase of training is the internship. Clients are placed in training related positions where employment opportunities exist. They are evaluated in real work environments and are strategically positioned to be offered permanent employment at the end of internships.
Job placement in permanent, full-time positions is the goal of vocational skills training. Clients are monitored and evaluated throughout training and, upon placement, are monitored and evaluated for an additional 90 days.
